Sebaliknya Kiai Hasyim juga memanggil KH Ahmad Dahlan dengan panggilan akrab Mas Darwis. Konon, keduanya juga tinggal sekamar. Selama kurang lebih dua tahun kedua santri ini mengabdi dan belajar agama pada Kiyai Sholeh Darat dan Darwis mendapat nama yang sampai sekarang dikenal semua orang yaitu Ahmad Dahlan.

Jadi sanad inilah yang membedakan antara keilmuan agama Islam dan keilmuan awal masa perkembangan Islam, sanad diberlakukan hanya dalam periwayatan Al-Qurâan dan Hadits. Namun pada masa belakangan, sanad juga digunakan dalam periwayatan kitab-kitab karya ulama Muhammad Hasyim Asyâari adalah orang pertama yang menyelenggarakan kajian hadits dan juga tradisi sanad di Indonesia. Demikian sebagaimana pernah dijelaskan KH M Tolchah Hasan dalam suatu kesempatan bedah pemikiran KH Hasyim Asyâari di Universitas Islam Malang pada tahun Tolchah juga menjelaskan, KH Hasyim Asyâari membawa tradisi sanad ini dari Syekh Mahfud Termas. Kita mengetahui bahwa Syekh Mahfud Termas, sebagaimana dijelaskan sejarawan Abdurrahman Masâud dalam bukunya âIntelektual Pesantrenâ, adalah pemegang sanad terakhir the last link demikian, bukan berarti bahwa KH Hasyim Asyâari hanya mendapatkan sanad Sahih Bukhari saja dari Syekh Mahfud, melainkan juga sanad Kutubus Sittah. Jadi pantaslah jika Nahdlatul Ulama menyatakan dirinya bermazhab kepada salah satu imam ini kami sajikan sanad kitab Sunan Abi Dawud yang ditulis oleh Al-Imam Al-Hafidh Abi Dawud Sulaiman bin Asyâats As-Sajistani radliyallahu anhu.
